It was confirmed that 26 countries will be entering in 2003, which means that Slovenia who was relegated from 2002 now qualify. Slovakia and Hungary did not broadcast the contest in 2002, hence they cannot enter in 2003. Any more countries and the contest could last 4 hours!

From 2004, the Eurovision will become a 2 day event, where all entries are held on a Friday and the best songs go through to the live final. Whether the Friday show will be televised, I don't know. This also means that more than the 26 allowed countries can enter and all allow to vote for each other. It is possible that 40 countries can vote! (Source EBU)

The draw took place on 29th November 2002 in Riga. The 2 presenters for the contest are Renars Kaupers who is the lead singer of the band "Brainstorm" that repesented latvia in 2000 and Marija Naumova (last year's winner). (See left).

Many thanks to Noam in Israel for the dates, draw order and songs. Also thank you for all those people who emailed me with the titles. There are too many to list.

New countries will not be entering in 2003 but will enter in 2004 which are Andorra, Albania, Belarus, Georgia (now member of EBU), Yugoslavia (to be known as serbia-montenegro). However, Ukraine has somehow been allowed to enter the 2003 contest.

Two possible venues were to host the contest which are Skonto Stadium (hall 1) and the Kipsala Exhibition Centre, but the Skonto Stadium was chosen. The people at the Kipsale Exhibition Centre are very angry about this because they were given no criteria in which to present a presentation to the EBU. The people at Kipsala do not think Lativa can produce a good contest and wanted it to past to Malta but work has already started on the Skonoto Hall. (This happened to Estonia in 2001 when it nearly gave it to Denmark). Around 6,000 people will fit in the hall, with better acoustics and a moden revamp inside and out.

The 2003 logo has been selected. Ireland are going to be having a national final in a pop idol format (similar to 2002's Spain entry. Poland will also have a national final in 2003 for the first time. Esther Hart withdrew from the UK Entry because she was offered to sing for the Netherlands in the finals.

In a change of previous televoting, the time to televote in 2003 will be reduced from 5 minutes to 3 minutes. Could be something to do with Greece voting for Cyprus and vice versa!

Many thanks to Noam in Israel and Michael from the UK for these information.
